I was looking for an inspirational landscape to paint. I decided to take a little country road “Louie Road” because that is my uncle’s name. I drove along for about 8 miles until the pavement ended without finding anything that caught my eye. So I turned the car around to leave and there was this wonderful meadow with deep shadows and magnificent mountains in the distance. Inspiration found. Whenever I look at this painting, I remember the warmth, peace and quiet of that special day.

These falls are along the McCloud River in Northern California. This painting started out as a plein air piece during a workshop that I took with Stefan Baumann of PBS’s The Grand View series. I fell so in love with the strength and size of the waterfall and the surrounding landscape, that I decided to put it on a larger canvas, this better reflects the strength and power of this wonderful waterfall.

During a return trip to Oregon from visiting my daughter’s family, I was impressed with the strength of this snowstorm as it started bearing down on us.  The brilliant light that broke thru the clouds and highlighted the snowy meadow below brought back memories. One in particular, a feeling of excitement during the approach of such a storm when I was cross country skiing. I had to put that feeling on canvas.

I loved this large old barn and the adjacent rose garden.  But this is not their actual placement. I decided to take creative license and move the flowers and let the barn peek over the tree tops.  To me, this set-up seemed more enjoyable.

11" x 14"     154 sq. in.                    $370.00

This is a perfect place to experience those scenes of the farm life that my grandparents enjoyed.  One summer day, I was walking around when this old barn down along shadowy road caught my eye.  It brought back childhood memories of rustling straw and the calls of the horses in their stalls as my grandfather came closer with dinner.

I loved the visions of Monument Valley in the old western movies that I watched as a child.  So when I had the opportunity to visit there I jumped at it.  This flat stark red landscape and the Apache who choose to reside here in this spiritual place are fascinating. When we came to view a stone arch, I saw real beauty in this old tree.  In her twisted way, she reminded me of a gymnast.  So I decided to include her in the scene. She is lovely.

16" x 20"     320 sq. in.                    $825.00

In Monument Valley I was up at 4:30 to watch this sunrise.  As the sun raced along the valley floor it seemed to bring life to the cool morning and to this ancient pinion tree that seemed to grow taller and stronger in its warmth.

Driving along the Feather River Canyon is awe inspiring.  Steep granite canyon walls soar where trees cling to stay in their small patch of earth.  Then, other areas are rich in dense forests that grow right down to the waterline. What a delight to behold. Imagine my surprise when we stopped to stretch our legs and I found this blue bridge across a small trickling creek. I want to return here someday and discover where that path will take me.

23" x 32"     736 sq. in.                    $1,875.00

My daughter gave me this birdhouse on my birthday.  I hung it on a tree outside my bedroom window, so that I could look at it every morning when I woke up.  One morning when the sun was bright and shining directly on it, I noticed that the birdhouse was beginning to suffer the effects of time and weather.  So I decided to make this special gift immortal and I put its image on canvas.

There was an early snow and I wanted to catch the colorful leaves of autumn before they dropped.  I drove up Gold Mine road and found this spot where the mountains and the leaves were bathed in afternoon light.

This is one of the first paintings I’ve done.  I saw this picture in a Sunset magazine. I loved the meadow of purple flowers.  The thought of spending some time in the mountains snuggled-up with a good book appealed to me, so I painted it.

The  Mountain Cabin

We traveled to Italy and spent a week in the small mountain village some 30 miles southeast of Florence.  We passed this spot numerous times during our drives to the wine country.  One day the road leading up into the vineyard was warm with sunlight and the oak tree shadow over the old wall just appealed to me. I wanted to get a picnic basket and sit and enjoy the ambiance.

I wanted to show how the complementary colors of red and green played off each other so I painted these red shoes against a green background.  The warmth of the shadows really brings out the cool temperature of the red shoes.

African Violets

During our trip to Santa Fe we visited the Georgia O’Keeffe Gallery.  I was impressed with her style and I wanted to try my hand at painting bigger than life flowers.  I put them on this 24X24X2 inch canvas and I love the way they fill the space with their bright purple and lavender leaves.

Scrub  Oak

While on a trip to checkout a vacation spot I fell in love with this lone scrub oak growing out of a rocky lava bed.  This tree was determined to live on  this hill and it was beautiful.

Corn

This was a homework assignment.  Paint a ear of corn.  Why not a group of ears?  So I picked this group of Indian corn and put it on canvas.  I loved the colorful husks and the bright ears of corn.  Placing them on a adobe wall seemed to be the perfect way to display their beauty.

Boots

I was visiting with Ashland artist, Gabriel Lippert when I noticed these boots sitting in a corner of his studio.  When I inquired he said they belonged to a student of his who left them there.  I thought they had a personality and would make a great painting.  Because I couldn’t take the home Gabriel set up this still life which I photographed.   I think they reflect some serious use.

Toaster

A study of chrome on an immanent object.  I chose this old toaster because it in itself was a work of art.  I notice that the products of the 30 & 40’s had some artistic flare in their structure.  I think I caught the reflection of light on the chrome quite well.

Into  the  Light

This abstract work was the result of a paint out in Sacramento, California.  In the painting I saw what I felt was an approach to the lighted area in the upper right corner.  When I brought it home my husband loved it and after he framed it. It has hung in his office for years.  I think it is one of my best works. The frame is included with this giclee

The  Story  Teller

I have painted the images of the southwest and loved the colors. While looking through art magazines I noticed that the Indians were always depicted as hunters or warriors.  I wanted to show what I felt about the Indian culture when I visited and saw the petroglyphs.  I elected to show this Indian who through his artwork left something about their life as to how they lived and what spiritual ceremonies where important to them in their daily life’s.

Inanimate Objects

This a study of tin cans.  I feel that it is a perfect study.  It’s reflecting the beauty of immanent objects.  And has all the qualities of a really good painting.  Colorful objects in a perfect setting with shadows, reflection’s and a strong central focal point. Don’t you agree?

Flash  of  Color

In this painting I wanted to play with the light and reflections.  I was able to create a really different impression by placing the three light bulbs on a mirror and then reflecting the light off a piece of stained glass.  I liked the finished painting and entered it into a juried critique.  They thought the end result was really visually interesting and I won my ribbon.

I’m always a student, striving to improve my understanding and technique of light, shadows and color. As my painting start to come alive, I begin to feel the warmth and beauty of nature which always brings a smile to my face.
